Every AI model works from a limited amount of text at a time, called its context window. It holds your messages, its answers, any files you added and the instructions you gave. In a short chat, everything fits. In a long one, it fills up.
What happens as a chat grows
- Early instructions get pushed back. The format you asked for, the tone, the steps to check: they were said at the start, and every message since sits between them and the model's next answer.
- Old turns get trimmed or summarized. When a chat outgrows the window, apps drop or compress older messages to make room, and details go with them.
- Answers drift. The model still sounds sure of itself, but it skips a step, forgets a constraint or goes back to a style you told it to avoid.

A prompt you wrote carefully once holds every instruction that matters. Sending it again with the new request puts all of it right next to what the model is working on, instead of forty messages back. Nothing depends on the model remembering.
