Talk to your AI instead of typing

Speaking is faster than typing for most people, and AI apps handle spoken requests well. Your computer and phone already have dictation built in, so you can start today without installing anything.

Turn on dictation

Each device has its own shortcut.

  1. Mac: press the Microphone key, or press Fn twice, to start Dictation.
  2. Windows: press the Windows key and H to start voice typing.
  3. iPhone: tap the microphone on the keyboard.
  4. Android: tap the microphone in Gboard.

Speak a request

Click into the chat box of ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, start dictation and say what you want. Say the audience, the length and the format, the same way you would brief a colleague. Spoken requests tend to be longer and more detailed than typed ones, and detail is what gets a good first answer.

Keep the good ones

Now and then a spoken request works especially well. Save it. Copy the text, open the petal editor in Prompt Petal and paste it in as a new petal. The next time you need that request, the best version is one click away and you can skip the speaking.

Free holds five prompts you write and edit. Pro holds as many as you like.

Tidy a spoken prompt with Improve

Spoken prompts can wander. The Improve button in the petal editor cleans up the wording and keeps your meaning. Improve is free with built-in AI on Apple Intelligence Macs and iPhones and on Gemini Nano phones. On other devices, Improve copies a request you can paste to your own AI.

A simple routine

  1. Speak the request into your AI app.
  2. If the answer comes back right, save the wording as a petal.
  3. Tidy the wording with Improve.
  4. Next time, click the petal and skip the dictation.

What a spoken prompt adds

When you talk, you explain. You mention who the answer is for, what went wrong last time and what you want the result to look like. That context is what AI apps use to write a better first answer, and typed requests often leave it out because typing feels like work.

A few habits help. Pause between thoughts so dictation places the punctuation well. Read the text before you send it, because dictation sometimes mishears a name. Say the format out loud, such as three bullet points or a short email.

On the phone

On iPhone and Android, the Prompt Petal keyboard sits beside the microphone. Dictate a request, then tap a petal to add a saved instruction such as Make this friendlier. Both pieces land in the same chat box.

Start with one request

Pick the request you type most often. Say it aloud into your AI app today, keep the version that works, and save it as your first voice-born petal. After a week you will have a small set of proven prompts, and Prompt Petal will have them ready in your flower. Each new petal takes about a minute to make, and each one saves you the next dictation.
